How are Eating Disorders Treated?

Eating disorders are treated by a team of people with a range of expertise, who work together to support the person experiencing the disorder. Treatment intensity varies, depending on what stage the person is at in their eating disorder and what resources are available.

Australia’s National Eating Disorder Collaboration provides helpful information about eating disorder treatment, including information about the Stepped System of Care for Eating Disorders, people who might be involved in eating disorder treatment (The Care Team) and a Service Locator. Our resources page also includes information about finding an eating disorder healthcare professional.

Some Christians may also value spiritual support from a chaplain or member of their faith community who is familiar with this area. If you are in hospital for eating disorder treatment and would like this support, you could consider asking if there is a chaplain available who your treatment team would be comfortable for you to see. You might also like to reach out to people who you trust and feel safe with from your faith community. You could direct them to the ‘I Know Someone at Church Who Struggles with Eating’ and ‘I’m a Christian Leader’ sections of this website for help to understand eating disorders and how to provide helpful support.
